First we used it in our baking, then we placed it in our fridge’s to help control odorous and now we’re finding all kinds of uses for it in our laundry. Yes, it’s baking soda. This wonderful stuff can be used for countless purposes around the home and now it’s found its way into our laundry rooms. Baking soda is a wonderful agent to use when doing our laundry. And though some of the uses may seem like common sense, there are other less obvious uses for this wonderful stuff when used for our clothes!
Let’s start with the most obvious use for baking soda. Well known for its powerful effect on strong odorous, baking soda can remove sweat, smoke, and any other mildly unpleasant smells from our garments. All you need to do is fill up a bucket with warm water and a ½ cup of baking soda. Soak any not-so-fresh clothes in the tub for at least half an hour before washing and they will come out smelling just like new! For stronger smells such as gasoline or motor oil, sprinkle baking soda directly onto the shirt and place in a plastic bag. Tie up the bag and leave the clothes sitting in there for two days before washing.
And although babies are cute, the smell that comes from their spit and formula is not. To rid your clothes of this, rub the baking soda directly into the smelly spot and then toss directly into the wash. This is also a wonderful way to clean stuffed animals or anything else that baby might leave their mark on. Using baking soda on clothes is only one great trick for helping your laundry!
Help make your laundry detergents life easier by making it even more powerful with baking soda. Baking soda is a terrific and easy way to help make clothes fresher, cleaner, and it also acts as a fabric softener. Many people with sensitive skin find that they can’t tolerate the many scented fabric softeners that line the shelves of stores. Even those that claim to be unscented carry some whiff of aroma and so baking soda makes for a wonderful fabric softener without carrying some of the irritating components. To use baking soda in this way, run the water in the washing machine but do not add clothes. Instead add ¼ cup of baking soda and make sure that it is completely dissolved before adding the regular amount of detergent.
And while baking soda has many uses for your clothes, it also has many uses for your washing machine when there aren’t any clothes even it! When you are leaving for a trip and your washing machine won’t be used for some time, sprinkle some baking soda in the drum of your machine. This will not only keep it from smelling fresh, it will also prevent mold from becoming an issue.
Baking soda is a wonderful addition to anyone’s laundry shelf. Chances are, once you start using it, you will continually find your own ways where baking soda is useful.
