Danny La Rue, OBE (July 26, 1927 – May 31, 2009) La Rue – born Daniel Patrick Carroll in Cork, Ireland, his career spanned 60 years as a female impersonator, died peacefully in his sleep just before midnight on Sunday. La Rue had been battling cancer.
Danny preferred not to call himself a drag queen, but ‘a comic in a frock’.
Noel Coward called La Rue “the most professional, most witty and most utterly charming man in the business”, while Bob Hope described him as “the most glamorous woman in the world”.
La Rue was the first female impersonator to appear at the Royal Variety Performance before the Queen. He was named Theatre Personality of the Year in 1970 and Entertainer of the Decade in 1979.
