Robert Barton Englund (born June 6, 1947) is a leading horror films American actor, famous for the role of Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street film series. He received a Saturn Award nomination as Best Supporting Actor for A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors in 1987 and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master in 1988.
Englund was born in Glendale, California; his father was an aeronautics engineer who designed the U-2 spy plane. Englund started studying acting relatively soon, at the age of twelve. While being in high school, Englund attended Cranbook Theatre School in Bloomfield Hills. Later on he attended California State University Northridge for three years, being transferred to Michigan’s Oakland University, being trained at the Meadow Brook Theatre. Englund has been married three times, first he married Elizabeth Gardner in September 1968 while he was still in college, and they divorced in 1986. He married actress Roxanne Rogers in 1986, divorcing after only two years in 1988. In October, the same year, Englund married his current wife, Nancy Booth.
Englund loves surfing; he even appeared on Entertainment Tonight, in 1981, talking about surfing.
His first appearance in a film was in Buster and Billie, in 1974, appearing ever since in more than 100 films. His first notable appearance was with the role of Willie in the 1983 miniseries, V, as well as in the sequels V: The Final Battle (1984) and V: The Series (1984).
Following his major success with A Nightmare on Elm Street, Englund became the new star of horror films after Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing in the 1960s. His memorable performance helped him to play the leading roles in The Phantom of the Opera (1989), The Mangler (1995) and 2001 Maniacs (2005).
Englund is one of the few actors to play a horror character for eight consecutive times. The only other actor with the same performance is Doug Bradley, playing the role of Pinhead for eight times in the Hellraiser.
Englund also had numerous appearances on television; he was the star of the series Nightmare Café (1992), and reprising the role of Freddy Kruger in the Freddy’s Nightmares series. He had several guest appearances in numerous series, such as Babylon 5, Masters of Horror, MadTV, Sliders or Knight Rider. Besides acting, he was the voice of various characters in several productions: Felix Faust in Justice League, The Riddler in The Batman, or The Vulture in The Spectacular Spider-Man and in The Super Hero Squad Show. He also played the role of The Devil in an episode of Married … with Children.
Englund was the host of the Horror Hall of Fame awards show three times between 1989 and 1991.
Englund debuted as a film director in 1989 with the horror movie 976-EVIL, the second feature, Killer Pad appeared directly on DVD in 2008.
Englund along with co-author Alan Goldsher wrote a memoir, Hollywood Monster: A Walk Down Elm Street with the Man of Your Dreams which is due to be published in October 2009 by Pocket Books.
Englund was ranked the #40 top villain for the American Film Institution’s Top 100 list of 100 Heroes and Villains for the role of Freddy Krueger. His performance in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) was ranked #51 on Premiere Magazine’s 100 Greatest Movie Characters of All Time.
