Hugh Michael Jackman (born on 12 October 1968) is an Australian actor and producer and also a singer, dancer and actor in stage musicals, winning a Tony Award for his performance in The Boy from Oz.
In November 2008, Open Salon named Jackman the sexiest men alive, and later on the same month, People magazine named him Sexiest Man Alive”. He was the host of the Tony Awards for three times, and hosted the 81st Academy Awards on February 22, 2009.
Hugh Jackman was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia as the youngest of five children. He attended Knox GrammarSchool and after graduation he spent a year working at Uppingham School in England. Back to Australia Jackman attended University of Technology, Sydney, followed by a one year course The Journey at the Actor’s Centre in Sydney.
Jackman turned down a role in the soap opera Neighbours and attended Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts of EdithCowan University in Perth, Western Australia, graduating in 1994.
Jackman got known outside Australia in 1998, playing the leading role in the stage production Oklahoma in London’s West End.
His performance earned him an Olivier Award nomination as Best Actor in a Musical. In 2000, Jackman got the role of Wolverine in Bryan Singer’s X-Men, later on reprising his role in the sequels of the X-Men.
His performance in the 2001 film, Kate & Leopold earned Jackman a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor Motion PictureMusical or Comedy. In 2004, he won the Tony Award and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical. Plus, he hosted the Tony Awards in 2003, 2004 and 2005. He won an Emmy Award in 2005 for Outstanding Individual Performer in aVariety, Musical or Comedy program, for his 2004 hosting of the Tony Awards.
Jackman continued to appear in several films such as Van Helsing (2004), The Prestige (2006), Scoop (2006), Deception (2008)or Australia (2008).
Jackman’s is set to star in a remake of Carousel, due to be released in 2010 and is considered to play in the film version of the musical Sunset Boulevard. He will start shooting Wolverine 2 in Japan.
Jackman formed in 2005 a production company, Seed Productions with assistant John Palermo, company where Jackman’s wife is also involved. He is a global advisor of the Global Poverty Project and a World Vision ambassador.
Jackman has a great interest in various sports; in school he played rugby and cricket, and was a member of the swimming team. He likes basketball, kayaking and football, and he is a great fan of the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles a NRL club in Sydney.
Jackman married Deborra-Lee Furness in April 1996, after they met on Correlli a television series in Australia. Following Furness’ two miscarriages they have decided to adopt two children, Oscar Maximillian and Ava Eliot.
