Al Alberts, a Philadelphian icon, host of a long lasting talent show for kids on Channel 6 and talented singer known as the lead singer of the vocal group the four aces., died in Florida, at the age of 87.
Alberts was born in South Philadelphia and served in the US Navy during World War II. Later on he attended Temple University, earning a degree in finance. He married her wife, Stella in 1953.
The British-rock invasion that was changing the American music scene represented the turn in Albert’s career and led him to host the kid’s talent show.
“Rock and roll was coming in, and he said, ‘Honey, I feel we’ve got to make a change, and we’ve got to do it now,” Stella recalled.
His show was produced for two years on Channel 48, and then it was picked up by Channel 6 in 1970.
Alberts last performed in public at the Port Charlotte Cultural Center in January 2005.
