Samuel Pack “Sam” Elliott (born on August 9, 1944) is an American actor, seen as the classic picture of the American cowboy. He is well-known in numerous films by his characters of long-legged stature, thick mustache and characteristically deep commanding voice.

Elliott was born in Sacramento, California and moved to Oregon along with his family while was a teenager. He attended David Douglas High School in Portland and later on Clark College in Vancouver, Washington completing a two-year program. While ate college he got the leading role in Guys and Dolls. Elliott was suggested to become a professional actor and shortly after he got addicted to acting and said that he is heading to Hollywood to become a star. While Elliott was studying acting in Los Angeles, he worked in construction. For a short period of time, he resided in Princeton, West Virginia.

Elliott started his acting career as a character actor, his look and behavior made him perfect for Western films.

He debuted in a film in 1969 with the Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In the following years, 1970 – 1971, Elliott played the role of Doug Robert in the popular TV Series Mission: Impossible, also appearing the miniseries Murder in Texas in 1981 and A Death in California in 1986. He was the guest star on various shows, such as Felony Squad, Gunsmoke, Lancer or Hawaii Five-O. Elliott appeared in several TV movies as well, performing the role of Wild Bill Hickock in Buffallo Girls in 1995.

Elliott lent his voice for several commercials, such as the campaigns for Chevy, IBM, Union Pacific and remarkably he was the voice of the American Beef Council following the death of Robert Mitchum. In recent times, he performed the voice-overs for the Toyota Tundra commercials in 2007, as well as the voice-overs for the Colorado beer, Coors Beer.

The Officer Professional Development Recommended List of the US Army contains only two novels: The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara and Once an Eagle by Anton Myrer and Elliott starred in the film versions of both novels, playing the role of a US Army general officer. Elliott was the co-star in another war movie, We Were Soldiers along with Mel Gibson, movie based on the book, We Were Soldiers Once… And Young.

In 1976, Elliott was listed as one of the Twelve “Promising New Actors of 1976” in John Willis’ Screen World, Vol. 28. His scenes in the Legacy (1978) earned him the highest rating – 3 stars – from “The Bare facts”, which is a printed guide of nudity in movies.

Elliott married actress Katharine Ross in 1984. They both played in the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) but they started dating only in 1978 when they played together in The Legacy. Elliott and Ross have a daughter, Cleo Rose, born in September 17, 1984.
