Courteney Bass Cox (born on June 15, 1964), is an American actress, mostly known for her role as Monica Geller on the sitcom, Friends. At present she is starring in Cougar Town.
Cox was born in Birmingham, Alabama and has two older sisters and an older brother. After her parents divorce, she became a rebellious teen. She graduated from Mountain Brook High School in Mountain Brook, Alabama. Cox took architecture classes at Mount Vernon College in Washington D.C. for a year, but did not complete it, as she has chosen to follow modeling and acting career.
She first gained fame in 1984, appearing in the music video ‘Dancing in the Dark’ of Bruce Springsteen. In her early career, Cox appeared in Masters of the Universe (1987) and Cocoon: The Return (1988), as well as in the short-lived TV series Misfits of Science (1985) and in the TV series Family Lies in a recurring role from 1987 to 1989. In 1994, before her debut in the sitcom, Friends, she starred in the film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and guest-starred in the episode ‘The Wife’ on Seinfeld.
Later in 1994, she was cast as the character Monica Geller in the sitcom ‘Friends’ after she originally auditioned for the role of Rachel Green. It is her most famous role, lasting until 2004 for 10 seasons. She became – along with her female co-stars – the highest paid TV actress of all time, earning $1 million per episode for the 10th season of ‘Friends’ according to the Guinness World Book of Records (2005).
