Willard Christopher “Will” Smith, Jr. (born on September 25, 1968) is an American actor, film producer and rapper. Smith earned four Golde Globe Awards and two Academy Awards nomination and won several Grammy Awards.
Smith became successful as a rapper – The Fresh Prince in the late 1980s – and for his role in the television series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
Smith was born and grew up in West Philadelphia and Germantown in Northwest Philadelphia, attending Overbrook High School in West Philadelphia. He was nicknamed in school “Prince” because of his charming and sneaky manner, nickname that in the end turned into the “Fresh Prince”. As a teenager he started rapping and working with Jeff Townes, after meeting him at a party.
Smith began as the MC of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince as well as Ready Rock C, performing humorous songs. They won the very first Grammy in the Rap category in 1988. During his early career smith failed to properly pay his income taxes, so the IRS in the end assessed a $2.8 million tax debt against him, taking various possessions of him. He was almost bankrupt when he was signed up to NBC for the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air that became a successful show. His film career launched with his role in the film Bad Boys (1995).
As The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air ended in May 1996, Smith started a booming solo music career and in the same time starring in various films. Smith’s first two films, Independence Day (1996) and Men in Black (1997) were major hits, establishing his reputation as a bankable star. In 1998 he appeared along with Gene Hackman in Enemy of the State, followed by main roles in successful films, such as Men in Black II, Bad Boys II, Hitch or I, Robot. Smith also released several hit singles in the late 1990s.
Smith received an Academy Award nomination as Best Actor for his performance in the film Ali in 2001 and another Academy nomination for Best Actor for the movie The Pursuit of Happiness. In 2003, Smith and his wife created a sitcom, All of Us that debuted on UPN in September 2003.
In 2007, Smith starred in the film I am Legend, and the film’s commercial success established him “as the number one box office draw in Hollywood”. Smith is presently working on a film, The Last Pharaoh, playing the role of Taharqa. US president Barack Obama declared that if a film were to be produced about him, he would prefer Smith playing his role.
Smith married Sheree Zampino in 1992, but they divorced three years later. Later on, in 1997 Smith married actress Jada Pinkett and they have two children together.
Smith has been constantly listed in Fortune Magazine’s Richest 40 list of the richest Americans under the age of 40. Smith lives along with his family on Star Island in Miami Beach, Florida and in Los Angeles, Stockholm, Sweden and Philadelphia.
