Britney Jean Spears (born on December 2, 1981) is an American singer and entertainer born in Mississippi and grew up in Louisiana. She appeared in 1992 as a contestant on the Star Search show and starred in the television series The New Mickey Mouse Club from 1993 to 1994. Spears launched her first album …Baby One More Time, in 1999 that reached at number one on the Billboard 200. Her next album, Oops!… I did It Again in 2000 was a major success that is considered to have influenced the recovery of teen pop in the late 1990s.
Spears was born in McComb, Mississippi, attending gymnastics classes and competing in state-level competitions, also performing in local dance revues and singing in the local Baptist church choir. At the age of eight she entered New York City’s Professional Performing Arts School where she spent three summers appearing in a number of off-Broadway productions. In 1992 she was a contestant on the Star Search show, where she won the first round but in the end lost. Spears appeared in The New Mickey Mouse Club from 1993 to 1994, then returned to Kentwood where she went to high school for a year.
In October 1998, Spears launched her debut single “…Baby One More Time” that reached at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1999 and became the top selling single of 1999. The debut album … Baby One More Time also reached the number one on the Billboard 200 in January 1999.
In 1999, Spears appeared in the sitcom, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, also performing the song “(You Drive Me) Crazy”. In December 1999, Spears won four Billboard Music Awards, including Female Artist of the Year and a month later she won the Favorite Pop/Rock New Artist award at the American Music Awards.
In May 2000, Spears released the album Oops!… I Did It Again, being awarded by RIAA with a diamond certification with more than 10 million copies sold in US. In the same year, Spears launched her first world tour and earning two Billboard Music Awards for the album.
In early 2002 the four year relationship with Justin Timberlake ended and a year later started dating Limp Bizkit frontman, Fred Durst.
In 2002, Spears starred in the film Crossroads, performance that was poorly received and earned her Razzie Awards in the Worst Actress and Worst Original Song categories.
As a result of her career success, in 2002 Forbes magazine ranked her as the world’s most powerful celebrity with earnings exceeding $39 million.
At the 2003 MTV Video Awards she performed with Christina Aguilera and Madonna, with whom both Spears and Aguilera kissed on the lips, event that was highly publicized.
