“Avatar” is now a major hit, which is not a surprise to director James Cameron, who expected the movie to be a blockbuster. Cameron admitted this week that he always intended to an “Avatar” sequel and even turning it into a trilogy.
Cameron says Entertainment Weekly in this week’s issue, “I’ve had a storyline in mind from the start – there are even scenes in ‘Avatar’ that I kept in because they lead to the sequel. It just makes sense to think of it as a two or three film arc, in terms of the business plan. ‘The CG [computer graphic] plants and trees and creatures and the musculo-skeletal rigging of the main characters – that all takes an enormous amount of time to create. It’d be a waste not to use it again.”
Although directors frequently indicate sequels that never come about, this time the plan looks sure, as “Avatar” star Sam Worthington has already signed for reprising his role as Jake Sully.
Let’s not forget that Cameron had great success in the past with sequels, such as “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” made over seven times as much money as the initial “Terminator”.
In case “Avatar” sequel does materialize, it will be a couple f years before spectators can lay their 3D-glasses-enhanced eyes on it. Cameron is now in pre-production on his next film, “Battle Angel”, movie that uses some of the CG technology he created for “Avatar”. That film is set to be released in 2011.
