Adult film legend Jamie Gillis died in New York City on February 19, 2010 at the age of 66 after losing the battle with cancer.
He was born on April 20, 1943 in New York as Jamey Ira Gurman and was one of the adult film’s first real star and one of the most charismatic and significant figures of the industry. He graduated with honors from Columbia University in 1970 and as a aspirant theater actor and mime performer he worked as a taxi driver in part-time to support himself.
He answered an advertisement in 1971 for a nude model which opened the door for appearances in short films known as loops and in adult feature films. He quickly became an important male performer and best actor in East Coast adult films in the genre’s time of glory, from 1972 to 1983. Gillis appeared in all the main productions of this era, such as “The Private Afternoon of Pamela Mann”, “The Story of Joanna”, “Through the Looking Glass” or “Roommates”.
In the 1980s Gillis moved to the West Coast continuing his fruitful acting career. He even appeared in mainstream films, including the “Nighthawks” (1982) starring Sylvester Stallone. He became director & performer in 1989, initiating the “gonzo” style of porn videos and worked in the adult film industry until the early 2000s, having mostly non-sexual roles before his retirement at the end of 2007. It is considered to have appeared in more than 500 films and loops in his four decade acting career.
