Lisa Valerie Kudrow (born on July 30, 1963) is an American actress, famous mostly for her role as Phoebe Buffay in the sitcom Friends.
Kudrow was born in Encino, California and has a sister and a brother. She attended Portola Middle School in Tarzana, California, graduated from Taft High School in Woodland Hills, California and got her B.S. in biology from Vassar College.
At the insistence of her brother’s friend, comedian Jon Lovitz, she started her comedy career as a member of The Groundlings. For a short period of time, she was with Conan O’Brien and director Tim Hillman in the short-lived Unexpected Company. Kudrow appeared in an episode of the sitcom Cheers and in three episodes of season one of the sitcom Bob (1992-1993).
Kudrow was cast as Roz Doyle in Frasier, but during the filming of the pilot episode the role was re-cast with Peri Gilpin. She got her first regular television role on the sitcom Mad About You as Ursula Buffay. Kudrow reprised the character on the sitcom Friends as Phoebe Buffay, Ursula’s twin sister.
For her role as Phoebe on Friends (1994 – 2004), Kudrow won the 1998 Emmy Award in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category, as the first cast member of the series to win an Emmy Award. With her six nominations, she was the cast member with the highest number of nominations. The show was a major success, and Kudrow as well as the other cast members become famous. Lisa Kudrow and Friends co-star Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox earned $1 million per episode for the ninth and tenth season of the series, becoming the highest paid television actresses of all time.
