June Havoc (November 8, 1913 — March 28, 2010) who became renowned for the Broadway musical “Gypsy” died on Sunday at the age of 96.
She was sister to famous burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee.
Miss Havoc, started her career at the age of two as “Dainty June, The Darling of Vaudeville.” At age 14, she danced in the first of her seven marathons. She also starred in twenty-two Broadway plays and wrote two autobiographies, “More Havoc” and “Early Havoc.”
In 1982, she made her last Broadway appearance, as one of the finale Miss Hannigans in the long-running hit Annie. She also toured the country as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd.
Her motion picture career began in 1942Â with for the most part was “B” material. A couple of acknowledgments excelled, however, including the comedy “My Sister Eileen” and “Gentleman’s Agreement,” in which she played a racist secretary.
Havoc was nominated for a Tony Award for best director in 1964, for Marathon ’33, which she also wrote.
