Max von Sydow (born on April 10 1929) is a Swedish actor, who starred in numerous films and had supporting roles in several more. These films include The Seventh Seal, The Greatest Story Ever Told, The Exorcist and the 1980 version of Flash Gordon.
He was born Carl Adolf von Sydow in Lund, Skåne, Sweden and attended the Cathedral School, Lund, learning German and English. While at school, he -along with some friends- created an amateur theatre company. He studied at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, from 1948 to 1951. While at the Dramatic Theatre, he debuted on screen in the films Only a Mother (1949) and Miss Julie (1951).
He moved to Malmö in 1955 and this is where he met his mentor, Ingrid Bergman. He later worked together with Bergman on films such as The Seventh Seal (1957), Wild Strawberries (1957) and The Virgin Spring (1960). Von Sydow dominated the screen just as he did with the stage, and became an idol of the international arthouse film scene. His performance was recognized in 1954 when re received the Royal Foundation Culture Award.
