James Gammon (April 20, 1940 – July 16, 2010), a character actor who appeared in numerous western television shows and films, has died aged 70.
He died Friday at his daughter’s home in Costa Mesa, suffering from cancer of the adrenal glands and the liver.
He is probably mostly known as Lou Brown in the 1989 comedy “Major League” and its 1994 sequel. He had the main role in several films, such as Urban Cowboy, Leaving Normal, The Milagro Beanfield War, Silverado, Ironweed and Cold Mountain. He also appeared in many television series such as Bagdad Cafe, The Waltons, Homefront, Middle Ages as well as a main role in the miniseries Streets of Laredo (1995). He also made numerous guest-appearances in Gunsmoke or Grey’s Anatomy (2007).
He was the co-founder of the MET Theatre and won numerous Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards both for acting and directing.
He was born in Newman, Illinois. After briefly attending college he moved to Los Angeles where he became involved in local theater.
