Alfredo James “Al” Pacino (born on April 25, 1940) is an American actor and producer, mostly famous for his mobster roles in Scarface and in The Godfather trilogy. Besides his career in film, he has also had a successful career on stage and received several lifetime achievement awards, one of them from the American Film Institute.
He was born in East Harlem, New York City and attended the High School of Performing Arts, but dropped out of school at seventeen and worked at a series of low-paying jobs. He then joined the Herbert Berghof Studio. This was a hard period for him, as he was often without work and even homeless, sleeping on the street, theaters and at friend’s houses.
While studying at the Actors Studio, he discovered he had a gift for acting and that he actually enjoys it. In 1967, he spent a season at the Charles Playhouse in Boston, performing in Awake and Sing!, and in America, Hurrah. In 1968, he starred in The Indian Wants the Bronx at the Astor Place Theater, play that ran for 177 performances. His role in the play earned him an Obie Award for Best Actor.
