Fisherman Matthew Boyd (Richard Dreyfuss) while fishing in Lake Victoria is surprised by a minor earthquake which splits the lake floor and causes a whirlpool. He falls in and is ripped apart by the prehistoric piranhas that have emerged from the chasm. Jake Forester (Steven R. McQueen) reunites with his old crush, Kelly (Jessica Szohr), but is chased off by her boyfriend. Jake meets Derrick Jones (Jerry O’Connell) and Danni, and agrees to show him some hot spots on the beach the next day.
Meanwhile, the mutilated body of Boyd is found and the next day a lone cliff diver is attacked and eaten by the man-eating fish. Jake’s sister and brother, Laura (Brooklynn Proulx) and Zane (Sage Ryan) go fishing on a small sandbar island and because they forget the tie down the boat they are trapped in the middle of the lake. Jake meets up with Derrick on his boat, The Barracuda, where he also meets Crystal (Riley Steele) and cameraman Drew (Paul Scheer).
