Courtney Love is being sued by a jewellery firm over claims she failed to return nearly $114,000 worth of borrowed gems.
In a lawsuit filed by Jacob & Co yesterday, November 22, 2010, it is alleged the singer borrowed two white gold and diamond chains, a white gold, floral-designed mesh bracelet and a pair of white gold and diamond hoop earrings, and returned only the bracelet.
The jewellery firm – popular with several celebrities, including Madonna, Justin Timberlake and David Beckham – claims the singer told them she had lost the other borrowed items.
According to the suit, “Love has failed to return the Chains or the Earrings, despite repeated demand and her detention and retention of the Chains and Earrings are wrong.”
The firm’s lawyer Jeffrey Klarsfeld said their agreement with the 46-year-old rock singer made clear that she would be responsible for the gems “regardless of loss or damage”.
She was also caught up in other legal battles this year.
Courtney Love – as the widow of Nirvana frotnman Kurt Cobain – inherited most of the band’s publishing rights when he died in 1994.
She was involved in a legal battle with management company London and Co a couple of years ago, when she was sued for $1 million, claiming she failed to share her earnings from selling a part of the rights, which is estimated to have netted her $20 million.
However, earlier this year, London and Co revealed to a Los Angeles court the case had been settled. The agreement was also confirmed by Courtney’s lawyer, James Janowitz.
