Robert De Niro, Jr. (born on August 17, 1943) is an American actor, producer and director and it is seen as one of the greatest actors of his generation. In 1974, he was the young Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
The role of Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull (1980) earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor. He received Academy Award nominations for his roles in Taxi Driver (1976), Cape Fear (1991), The Deer Hunter (1976) and Awakenings (1990).
He was born in New York City, New York and grew up in the Little Italy area of Manhattan and in Greenwich Village. De Niro quit high school at 16 to pursue acting. He attended Little Red School House and was later enrolled at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music Art, in New York. He also attended the Stella Adler Conservatory and the Actor’s Studio.
He first worked with Brian De Palma in 1963, when he appeared opposite Jill Clayburgh in The Wedding Party. In 1973, he started the fruitful collaboration with Martin Scorsese, when he appeared alongside Harvey Keitel in Mean Streets (1973). A year later, he played the role of young Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather, Part II, performance which earned him him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
He continued to successfully work with director Scorsese in such films as Taxi Driver (1976), New York, New York (1977), Raging Bull (1980), The King of Comedy (1983), Goodfellas (1990), Cape Fear (1991) and Casino (1995). The Taxi Driver is the one that shot him to stardom.
In 1976, he appeared in Novecento (1900) alongside Gerard Depardieu and Donald Sutherland, while in 1978, for his role in The Deer Hunter, he received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
