Physical fitness expert, Jack LaLanne, (September 26, 1914 – January 23, 2011) died at his California home from respiratory failure due to pneumonia. He was 96.
He was born Francois Henri LaLanne in San Francisco on September 26, 1914. A self-confessed “sugar-holic” as a child, he went on to study weight-lifting and bodybuilding by the time he was in his late teens.
In 1936, LaLanne opened America’s first modern health club in Oakland, California.
In 1959 “The Jack LaLanne Show,” went national, teaching people how to work out and eat right, the daytime television show had a 34-year run.
LaLanne is survived by wife Elaine, two sons, Dan and Jon, and a daughter, Yvonne.
