In a jungle not far from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil a baby Blue Macaw bird has not learned to fly yet. Several birds, among them the macaw, are captured by smugglers and are transported to Moose Lake, Minnesota, United States. However, the box with the baby bird is left on the street by accident and it is found by Linda (Leslie Mann), a girl who names the bird Blu.
15 years later, Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) still can’t fly and lives with Linda in a bookstore. Linda learns from a Brazil scientist Tulio (Rodrigo Santoro) that Blu is the last male from its species and needs to be taken to Rio to mate with a female macaw in order to preserve the species. In Rio, Blu meets the female, Jewel (Anne Hathaway) and falls in love with her, but she just wants to escape. Smugglers, lead by the chief smuggler’s cockatoo, Nigel (Jemaine Clement) break into the shelter and Blue and Jewel are both captured and chained together. However, they manage to escape but get lost in the jungle.
