Ellen Kathleen Pompeo (born on November 10, 1969) is an American actress, mostly known as Meredith Grey on the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.
She was born in Everett, Massachusetts and has three sisters and two brothers. She served cocktails in Miami, for two years. In Miami she met photographer Andrew Rosenthal and they were romantically involved for some time. While bar-tending at the SoHo Bar & Grill, New York City in 1996, she was approached by an agent to appear in commercials. She did commercials for L’Oreal and Citibank. Her acting career began with small roles on such television shows as Friends, Strangers with Candy and Law & Order.
To pursue her acting career, she moved to Los Angeles in 2001 and worked with Thalia on the movie Mambo Café. Her career breakthrough came along when she was cast in a role in the film Moonlight Mile (2002). She appeared in Catch Me If You Can (2002) and in Old School (2003). She also had guest roles on Law & Order and Friends. She played the role of Naomi in the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), but her scenes were deleted from the film.
She landed her first significant role in the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, as Meredith Grey. In 2007, she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Drama Series.
In November 2007, she married record producer Chris Ivery and they have a daughter together, born in September 2009.
