Ed O’Neill (born on April 12, 1946) is an American actor, who is mostly famous for his role as Al Bundy on the sitcom Married… with Children. His performance earned him two Golden Globe nominations. Currently he plays the role of Jay Pritchett on the sitcom Modern Family.
He was born in Youngstown, Ohio and attended Ursuline High School and Ohio University (with a football scholarship) majoring in history. Later on, he transferred to Youngstown State University where he played as a defensive lineman. Before becoming an actor, he was a social studies teacher at Ursuline High School.
After he was cut by the Steelers, he signed up at YSU and participated at the school’s theatre program. He appeared in the stage production of Of Mice and Men at the American Repertory Theater, Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1985, he appeared in a Red Lobster commercial and in commercials for AOL and 1-800-COLLECT. In 1986, he was cast as NYPD Police Detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle for the series Popeye Doyle. The character first appeared in the movie The French Connection. Although he received positive reviews for his performance the series never entered in production.
