Gervais Duan “G. D.” Spradlin (August 31, 1920 – July 24, 2011) best known for his roles in more than 70 films and television shows, including “Apocalypse Now,” “Tank.” and “The Godfather: Part II” died on Sunday at his cattle ranch in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He was 90.
He also was the admiral in “War and Remembrance” and a pro football coach in the film “North Dallas Forty” and a college basketball coach in the film “One on One.”
An Oklahoma native, a former lawyer, Spradlin turned to acting at 40 after striking it rich in the oil industry.
He ran Senator John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign in Oklahoma in 1960, and he himself ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Oklahoma City in 1965.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Hendrickson; his daughters, Tamara Kelly and Wendy Spradlin; and five grandchildren.
