At the Homestead-Miami Speedway Michelle Obama was present at the Nascar event in Miami to support military veterans and their families. Video footage captured booing as the wife of President Barack Obama appeared alongside Dr Jill Biden to say “the most famous words in motorsports”, telling the drivers to start their engines prior to the race getting underway.
ABC reports that the pair stood beside retired Army Sgt. Andrew Barry and his family ahead of starting the race. Barry served in both Afghanistan and Iraq, being wounded in both but sympathy for him was drowned out by the reaction to Obama as the economic situation in America tightens at the same time the Republicans seek to find a candidate to challenge the current term holder.
Strangely the incident was minimized by much of the press, with a source saying that there was no evident booing, more a “loud chaotic program with jets flying over and tons of noise.” They made out better at a pre-race meeting with the drivers, receiving a standing ovation following a speech to them during which the First Lady praised Nascar for being “amazing in terms of its support, not just today but every day, for military families.”
