Carrie Marie Underwood (born on March 10, 1983) is an American country singer, who became famous as the winner of American Idol’s fourth season.
She was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma and grew up in the rural town of Checotah, Oklahoma. She attended Checotah High School and Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, graduating in 2006 with magna cum laude.
In 2004, she auditioned for American Idol in St. Louis, Missouri. Judge Simon Cowell predicted that she would win the competition and would outsell all American Idol earlier winners. She became the winner of the fourth season of the show on May 25, 2005.
Her debut album, Some Hearts, was released in November 2005 and quickly became the biggest debut of any given country artist since the introduction of the SoundScan system (1991). Her singles from the debut album were also major hits topping the major charts. In 2006, she won the Breakthrough Artist of the Year Award at the American Music Awards. She also won 5 awards at the Billboard Music Awards in 2006: the Album of the Year, Female Country Artist, Top 200 Female Artist of the Year, Country Album of the Year and New Country Artist. In 2007, at the Academy of Country Music awards she won Album of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year and Video of the Year.
