Robert Downey, Jr. defended his friend Mel Gibson over his problematic personal life, asserting he will always “love” Gibson for hiring him “no one else would”.
The star of Iron Man, who had drug and alcohol addiction problems in his career, has known Gibson from the 1980s, and they first starred together on screen in Air America in the 1990s.
Downey, Jr. faced personal problems in the late 1990s and even spent years in and out of jail and rehabilitation centers until he defeated his addictions in 2001.
As a result, he experienced serious difficulties in finding work and will be thankful forever to Gibson for hiring him for The Singing Detective in 2003.
Downey, Jr. claims he will always support his friend as he tries to overcome his own troubles. Gibson made the deadlines earlier this year, when his former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva accused him of assault during a violent domestic dispute.
Downey, Jr. declares Access Hollywood, “I’ve known the guy for 25 years and he hired me when no one else would. So I think that’s enough said on my position. I love the guy.”
