Warner Bros. and Atlas Entertainment studio and production company have started working on a feature film based on “Gilligan’s Island” sitcom which had a considerable success between 1964 and 1967.
Charles Roven and Richard Suckle will produce for Atlas while Brad Copeland will be writing the screenplay. Initial show producer Sherwood Schwartz will be the executive producer with son Lloyd Schwartz.
They are planning a contempo with the initial idea and characters. According to Daily Variety, Roven is hoping to begin production next year but he is not looking for a director or cast before the script is not completed. Roven also said, “We think it’s going to be a great story to transport these cultural icons to the modern day.”
“Gilligan’s Island” featuring Bob Denver and co-stars Tina Louise, Alan Hale Jr., Dawn Wells, Russell Johnson, Jim Backus and Natalie Schafer, focused on the wild misadventures of seven castaways on an unknown and deserted island in the Pacific.
The last episode of the show aired on April 17, 1967 as there was no fourth season.
Although no casting has been performed, according to Sherwood Schwartz in an interview he wanted Michael Cera in the lead role.
Roven’s previous works include “Batman Begins”, The Dark Knight”, “The International” “The Bank Job” or the upcoming “Season of the Witch”.
Presently, Copeland is writing “Flight of the Navigator” with such previous works as “Wild Dogs”, “Monster Squad” or “Yogi Bear”.
