Six months after the events of Iron Man Tony Stark uses his arc reactor powered exoskeleton to negotiate peace between two world super powers. After fulfilling his father’s dream of opening Stark Expo, an exposition showcasing latest inventions beneficial to the world his popularity with the public grows tremendously. Despite all this the US government and Senator Stern demand from him to give them the technology he used to create the armor so it can be used for military purposes. He refuses and humiliates his competitor Justin Hammer by mocking his attempts of replicating the armor. To make matters worse Stark discovered that the palladium in his arc reactor slowly poisons him. Unable to find a replacement and sure he is going to die, he makes his former assistant Pepper Potts chief executive officer of Stark Industries.
While driving a race in Monaco Stark gets attacked by Ivan Vanko, who also managed to build an arc reactor and a weapon that uses the energy of the reactor to create electrical whips. Using his portable armor Stark is able to defeat Vanko.
After getting drunk at his birthday party Stark gets approached by Nick Fury who gives him some of his father’s artifacts that lead him to the discovery of a new element that he then uses to cure his poisoning.
At the Stark Expo Hammer presents new military drones that are controlled by Vanko.
When Stark and his friend Lt. Colonel James Rhodes arrive at the expo they get attacked by Vanko. They are able to defeat him but his drones self-destruct and Stark hurries to rescue Pepper, he is able to save her in the last minute and after they land on the roof Pepper resigns from her CEO position and the two share a passionate kiss.
