Robyn Rihanna Fenty (born on February 20, 1988), known as Rihanna, is a Barbadian R&B artist, songwriter and model.
She was born in Saint Micheal, Barbados and attended the Combermere School. At 15, she formed a girl group with two classmates of hers. In 2003, she was introduced to record producer Evan Rogers who was in Barbados in vacation. Rogers was impressed by Rihanna and after turning 16, she moved to the United States and moved in with Rogers and his wife. She recorded a four-song demo, which made its way to Def Jam, who eventually signed her.
Her very first single, “Pon de Replay” was released on August 22, 2005 and soon became an international hit. Her first album, Music of the Sun was released in August 2005 and received a Gold certification by the Recording Industry Association of America. She soon started to work on her second studio album – A Girl Like Me – which was released in April 2006. Following the release of the album, she embarked on her first tour, the Rihanna: Live in Concert Tour. She also debuted as an actress in a cameo role in the DVD film Bring It On: All or Nothing, released in August 2006.
Her third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad (2007) topped the charts in such countries as the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Russia, Japan and Brazil and reached #2 in Australia and the United States. The album was sold in over two million units in the US, becoming her best-selling album, to date. At the 2007 MTV Video Music Award she won the Monster Single of the Year and Video of the Year. She earned her first Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 2008 Grammy Awards. In September 2007, she embarked on her second tour – The Good Girl Gone Bad – with shows in the United States, Canada and Europe, followed by the Glow in the Dark Tour with Lupe Fiasco, N.E.R.D. and Kanye West in April, 2008. At the 2008 American Music Awards she won Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist and also Favorite Soul/R&B Female artist.
